Six new board members elected to William & Mary Foundation

Six William & Mary alumni have been elected to the Board of Trustees of the William & Mary Foundation.

The new trustees are: Janet Rollins Atwater ’84, P ’17, P ’20, Andrew Horrocks ’87, David Kelley ’81, Jill Marie Lord ’94, Michael Sapnar ’88, P ’20 and Raelene Canuel Wagoner ’87, P ’20.

They were elected last fall during the Foundation Board meeting. In their new roles, the trustees will help ensure the success of the For the Bold campaign, which is crucial to the university’s capacity to fund its priorities.

“Foundation trustees have become increasingly vital to our philanthropic efforts,” said William & Mary President Taylor Reveley. “We are enormously grateful to them.”

The Foundation Board is chaired by Nancy Burgess Gofus ’75, who sits on the For the Bold campaign steering committee, the D.C. regional campaign board and was a member of her 40th Reunion gift committee.

“We are thrilled to welcome our newest members of the Foundation Board; collectively, they bring a wealth of different backgrounds, skills and experiences together with a shared love of William & Mary and a deep commitment to ensuring this special place will endure for all time coming,” Gofus said.

“We know that without substantial private support, William & Mary cannot continue to provide a high-caliber academic experience for all students, regardless of their financial means,” Gofus added. “As our For the Bold campaign continues in year two of the public campaign, we welcome the efforts of these new trustees in helping to tell our story and to invite others to join in this critical initiative.”

The Foundation board consists of 46 distinguished trustees, from across the country. They are elected to three-year terms and may be re-elected for two additional terms.

Below is a sketch of each new trustee.

Atwater has worked in professional theatres across the country as an actress, singer and arts administrator. She also worked at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s satellite graduate school in Hartford, Conn., overseeing courses in continuous quality improvement, quality function deployment and computer technology. At William & Mary, Atwater chaired several leadership boards, including the Alumni Association and Fund for William & Mary.

Horrocks is a former managing director of Credit Suisse in the investment banking and capital markets division, based in New York, where he was global head of transportation and autos. Horrocks and his wife, Amy, actively support charitable organizations dedicated to improving health care and education, primarily for youth. He is also serving on W&M’s New York Regional Campaign Committee.

Kelley is a partner with Dechert where he co-chairs the firm’s white collar and securities litigation group. . He previously served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Kelley led the prosecution in the U.S. Justice Department’s probe of the 9/11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. He is a member of the For the Bold Campaign Steering Committee and co-chairs the New York Regional Campaign Committee. He is a past president of the William & Mary Alumni Association.

Lord is an architectural historian who specializes in 19th-century American architecture and is an adjunct professor in the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture. She has presented her most recent work focusing on libraries at such venues as the Mount Vernon House Museum in New York City and the Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians in 2013. In 2014, Drayton Hall selected her for its Distinguished Speaker Series. Lord is a member of William & Mary’s Monroe Commission. She is a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Muscarelle Museum of Art Foundation.

Sapnar is president and CEO of Transatlantic Holdings, Inc. and its subsidiaries, Transatlantic Reinsurance Company (a wholly owned operating company of Alleghany Corporation) and Fair American Insurance and Reinsurance Company (Fairco). Prior to TRC, Mike spent eight years at Continental Insurance as an underwriter and branch manager for the Guaranty and Credit division. He serves on the New York Regional Campaign Committee.

Wagoner leads human resources (HR) at Customer Value Partners (CVP). She has over 25 years of experience in technology firms as a HR executive, consulting delivery leader and engineer. Wagoner has extensive experience creating or optimizing human resources organizations and global experience in Latin America, Europe and Asia. Prior to joining CVP, Wagoner spent seven years leading HR at Mantas, a software product company.
