2017 W&M Graduation Series: Morgan Sehdev

Morgan Sehdev ’17 is one of several William & Mary seniors who will be featured in a scholarships series on our blog, The Gale, leading up to Commencement.

Major: Hispanic Studies

What type of impact do you want to make on the world and how do you plan to do it?

I want to help change the face of health care and make it a more inclusive and culturally sensitive entity. I believe that a lot of influence disseminates out of the health care system and I would like to make it an even more positive influence in our lives.

What are your plans for the future, or in your career?

I hope to study medicine and medical anthropology so that I can practice medicine while researching methods to improve culturally sensitive care.

What skills have you gained while attending W&M, and/or, how has William & Mary prepared you for the future?

William & Mary has taught me how to be compassionate, how to conduct significant research and how to focus my gaze outwards so that I develop a deep sense of care and responsibility for those around me. I learned how to be a true academic and learned how to do the type of research that gets me excited on a daily basis.

Looking back, what is the best thing you will take with you from your experience at William & Mary? (A favorite memory or tradition, times with your closest friends, your favorite professors, or life lessons, etc.)

I think that I truly found myself at William & Mary. I came to accept myself and understand what makes me, me. Besides the lessons learned in the classroom, I will carry with me forever the lessons my friends and professors have taught me about being a curious, fun-loving, adventurous, outgoing and hardworking person.

How did scholarships impact your William & Mary experience?

I would not have been able to do half the things I did at William & Mary without scholarship support. It helped me originally come to William & Mary, it allowed me to conduct some of the coolest research, it provided a means for me to study and do research abroad, and it did all this while making the experience affordable.

How has a scholarship changed your trajectory in life? Would you have come to W&M without a scholarship?

I would not have been able to come to W&M without a scholarship. I don't think that I would have developed the interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving that I love so much without the influence of William & Mary. Instead of hoping to pursue a physician-researcher position, I might not have even decided to go to medical school one day. I cannot see myself learning to love research enough anywhere else that I'd be motivated enough to strive for the dual degree and to strive for academic excellence always.
