W&M Weekend Wednesdays

Join us for William & Mary Weekend, the university’s newest signature event, which brings the Tribe community together to connect, discover and celebrate like never before. The inaugural event, which will take place in Washington, D.C., June 2-5, will bring the best of William & Mary to our nation’s capital and provide exclusive access in iconic settings. W&M Weekend Reception

Come out for a special evening with one of William & Mary’s most prominent alumni, FBI Director James B. Comey Jr., as he sits down with internationally acclaimed journalist Charlie Rose to talk about national security threats and the importance of public service, among other critical topics.

James B. Comey Jr. ’82, LL.D. ’08

In September 2013, James B. Comey was sworn in as the seventh director of the FBI. He graduated from William & Mary with a double major in chemistry and religion, and went on to earn a degree from the University of Chicago Law School. Following law school, Comey served as an assistant United States attorney for both the Southern District of New York and the Eastern District of Virginia. He returned to New York to become the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. In 2003, he became the deputy attorney general at the Department of Justice (DOJ). Comey left the DOJ in 2005 to serve as general counsel and senior vice president at defense contractor Lockheed Martin. Five years later, he joined Bridgewater Associates, a Connecticut-based investment fund, as its general counsel. Comey has remained closely connected to the university, speaking at two Opening Convocation ceremonies and at the 2008 Charter Day ceremony, where he received an honorary doctor of laws degree. He also served on the W&M Alumni Association’s Board of Directors from 2008-12, including serving as vice president from 2009-11. In 2011, the W&M Law School named Comey the Carter O. Lowance Fellow. The fellowship is one of the highest honors conferred by the Law School and W&M in recognition of significant public service.

Charlie Rose

Charlie Rose is anchor and executive editor of “Charlie Rose,” the nightly one-hour program that features one-on-one, in-depth conversations and round-table discussions, and the newly launched “Charlie Rose: The Week,” chronicling the best stories and interviews of the past seven days. He also co-anchors “CBS This Morning” and is a contributing correspondent to “60 Minutes.”

Michael K. Powell ’85, D.P.S. ’02

A current trustee of the College of William & Mary Foundation, Michael Powell served on the Board of Visitors from 2001 to 2009. During three of those years, he served as Rector, becoming the first African-American to serve in that post in William & Mary’s history. Powell has distinguished himself in the military, government, business and nonprofit sectors, serving as an officer in the U.S. Army’s 3rd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment; as chair of the Federal Communications Commission; as president and CEO of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association; and on numerous boards, including the Mayo Clinic, the Aspen Institute and America’s Promise, which seeks to end our nation’s high school dropout crisis.

Thomas W. Spoehr ’80

Thomas Spoehr assumed duty as the director of the Army Office of Business Transformation, Office of the Under Secretary of the Army, in July 2013. In this capacity, he works to improve the business processes and information technology that drive the Institutional Army. Prior to this assignment, he served as the director of Program Analysis and Evaluation.

Ellen Stofan ’83, D.Sc. ’16

Ellen Stofan was appointed as NASA’s chief scientist in 2013, serving as the principal advisor to NASA’s administrator on the agency’s science programs and science-related strategic planning and investments. Her research interests include the geology of the Earth, Venus, Mars and Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. Previously, Stofan served as the vice president of Proxemy Research in Maryland and an honorary professor at the University College London in England. Before that, she worked for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., acting in a number of senior scientist positions, including chief scientist for NASA’s New Millennium Program and deputy project scientist for the Magellan Mission to Venus. Stofan has chaired the board of the William & Mary Foundation and helped lead her class reunions.

Todd Stottlemyer ’85

Current W&M Rector Todd Stottlemyer graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in government. After receiving his law degree from Georgetown University in 1991, Stottlemyer went on to a successful career in the technology sector. Washington Smart CEO magazine recognized Stottlemyer as one of their 20 most admired CEOs in the Washington D.C. area. He has held a number of executive posts, serving as president, chief executive officer, chief financial officer and a former business owner. He currently serves as CEO of the Inova Center for Personalized Health. Stottlemyer has remained connected to his alma mater and has experience in higher education leadership across the Commonwealth. He previously served on the Board of Advisors for W&M’s Thomas Jefferson Program in Public Policy and the Athletic Educational Foundation, and is a former member of the William & Mary Washington Council and the Foundation Board.
